NFTs
Let's get one thing straight right away: An NFT (non fungible token) is a token, an asset, in digital form that is not exchangeable, such as the "token" €50 bill, where each €50 bill can be
exchanged for another of equal value. Primarily, an NFT has nothing to do with art; it is merely a component of trade, a tool of the economy.
There can be NFTs of everything that is tangible and intangible and can be traded, for example, sports shoes, real estate, jewelry, or even digital (digitized) works of art. There are now even
NFTs of shares in racehorses.
An art NFT is therefore not a work of art, but a certificate of the current owner of a work of art, i.e. the person who has the right to use the work of art, in other words: the power of
disposal. So the owner does not necessarily have to be the current owner, the work can be stored on the server of an auction house, for example.
So the current hype about art NFTs is ultimately not about art, but about business and speculation. The very few NFT artworks offered on the net do not meet the simplest criteria for good art at
all. As Georg Bak, chief curator of the platform "elementum" in Switzerland, said when confronted in an interview with the fact that 98% of the NFT offers are art junk after all: "No, 99%".
We should all - according to artist YOOL - take a step back and look at the criteria for art or even digital art: Content (timeliness, relevance), form (shape, variation and permutation), degree
of innovation, quality of execution, specifics of digital versus analog art. Only after curation should marketing follow. The vast majority of sales or auction platforms do not meet these
requirements.
And YOOL is sure: the current hype will soon come to an end and art will come to the fore again.
The following app is an art NFT. It is hosted by the Swiss online gallery elementum, with whom YOOL is contracted. (www.elementum.art, found under his real name: Reinhold Knapp).
